In the second half of the quattrocento fervent innovations characterised the great public commissions in Siena: the bronze sculptures of the Duomo, the bronze angels by Francesco di Giorgio and Beccafumi, the series of marble sculptures in the Loggia della Mercanzia and the ciborium by Vecchietta; in painting, the cycles of frescos in the Sala del Concistoro of Palazzo Pubblico painted by Beccafumi and the monochrome frescos depicting Saint Augustine executed by Francesco di Giorgio, Pietro Orioli and Luca Signorelli; the fascinating stories of the monks in Monteoliveto Maggiore frescoed by Sodoma and Luca Signorelli. The Pinacoteca Nazionale of Siena houses the majority of the large panels destined to replace the polyptychs of medieval tradition such as those painted by Beccafumi, Francesco di Giorgio, Matteo di Giovanni, Vecchietta, Pietro Orioli.
