Amiata

On the Sienese side of Monte Amiata, in the hamlet of Radicofani, anyone interested in the production of artworks in glazed terracotta by the Della Robbia family would find a sort of anthology of these works, the most accomplished examples of the Renaissance statuary.
In the romanesque church of San Pietro a remarkable portion of that production is preserved: a Madonna and Child by Andrea della Robbia and from his workshop a large altarpiece representing the Madonna and Child with the Saints Anthony the Abbot and Giobbe; on the high altar the Crucifixion with the grieving Magdalen attributed to Benedetto Buglioni (1490-95); and another great representation, also from Andrea della Robbia's workshop the Madonna and Child with the Saints Michael the Archangel and Catherine of Alexandria.

In the nearby church of Sant'Agata, the altarpiece is regarded as one of the masterpieces of the Della Robbia's ceramics: the Madonna and Child with the Saints Francis, Elizabeth of Hungary, Christina of Bolsena, Lawrence, created by Andrea della Robbia (ca. 1500).

One of the most important pictorial cycles in the territory of Monte Amiata is without doubt the one created in 1468 by the painter from Orvieto Nanni di Pietro for the church of Madonna delle Grazie in Piancastagnaio; In the representations we notice the influence from the Sienese figurative arts for the many contacts the artist, collaborator of Matteo di Giovanni and attentive of Vecchietta's new ideas and technique, managed to entertain in the Sienese centre.
